The famous region of the South West England, Devon is one of the biggest counties there which have developed its identity as a tourist destination of sorts. This country has a big coastline starting from the English Channel in the southern portion to ending at the Bristol Channel to its north. Cornwall surrounds this county in the western region whereas Dorset and Somerset borders this county in the eastern region. This country is also informally called Devonshire which is totally an unofficial recognition of it and not known to many people in the county itself. But this name is still important due to its traditional and historical context. This county has its distinction in England by accommodating two separate coastlines in its borders.

Famous as a cathedral city of Exeter, this county as a tourist destination has two independent unitary authorities named the port city of Plymouth and the Torbay conurbation of the seaside resorts besides its Devon County Council. Its identity and being a choice of the tourists remain vibrant due to its rural lifestyle. Plymouth is the biggest city of this county. The National Park here attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site of England, the Dorset and East Devon Coast, famously called the Jurassic Coast, makes this county a distinct place which has excellent scientific approach. This site has several geological and geographical features which also attracts the incoming holidaymakers. Devon has the metaphor for several excellent features which it preserves. This county is also famous as Cornubian massif.

The seaside resorts, historic towns and cities and excellent mild climate of Devon make this county a hub of tourism in Europe. Its historic port, county town and Torbay are exclusive tourist locations besides the beach at Westward Ho! in the north Devon which keeps each tourist engaged. They can easily move forward to the Taw and Torridge estuaries from here. This county has rich cultural identity. Numerous festivals and traditional practices like the one of orchard-visiting Wassail in Whimple performed every January 17 and carrying out of flaming tar barrels in Ottery St. Mary are unique traditional entities of this county which invite enough gathering.

Rich cuisine here attracts the incoming tourists with its splendid tradition. Devon has the distinction to be named several culinary specialties including Devonshire cream tea, jam and clotted cream etc. The name Devon itself has its importance in the New South Wales and Australian region where Devon is but a luncheon meat. The Fairtrade Foundation had awarded Devon with the Fairtrade County status in October 2008.

Most importantly this county is known for its excellent cottage traditions. Usually wooded cottage here offer rustic flavour and the tourists feel at home in such places. These cottages though follow strict rule and regulation for the tourists. And no children below 3 years of age are permitted even with their parents. These tiny cottages are best for 2 + cot accommodation where tourists enjoy the pleasant moments of their life.
